The Chillout & Ambient Trance Thread

Arms of Loren (Tranquillo's Clear Water Mix) This appeared on Solarstone's Chilled Out Euphoria compilation 20+ years ago. Evocative vocals and sweeping pads that really take you away.

Ferry Corsten - Connect (Artist Album) [Flashover]

A solid album on the whole with nice melodies and songwriting. This is still trance at its core, with a more accessible mainstream sound. Would be even better if some ideas were further developed into longer tracks. The ideas were varied enough to keep me interested throughout the length of the...

Rare tracks not found in download stores

Looking for the extended mix of France 2000 on Three Drives' 2000 album. The shorter mixed version (4:18) can easily be found on the CD version of the album. The extended mix (5:46) appears exclusively on the vinyl release back in 1999 and not on download stores unfortunately...

Solarstone, Airscape, Super8 & Tab, York, ZOYA and Markus Schulz - In Search of Sunrise 20 [Songbird]

Gielen's mix itself is a tad disjointed with a number of beachy and clubby tracks all thrown in together. Nearly missed out on this beautiful track, which is second last on the mix. This track I think certainly has captured the ISOS vibes. Beautiful pads/soundscapes with ethnic vocals, soft...

Solarstone, Airscape, Super8 & Tab, York, ZOYA and Markus Schulz - In Search of Sunrise 20 [Songbird]

Had two proper listens to the Solarstone mix. The flow is there; there's been some thought put into the track selection. But at the end of the day, he can only work with what he's got. There's simply a dearth of quality summery or dreamy prog trance being produced these days. Individually, the...

Young Parisians feat. JES - Love Comes Quickly [Magik Muzik]

A fine track. Probably Solarstone's best work past few years. Was already a fan of the original by the Pet Shop Boys. This remix stays true to the spirit of the original and turns it into a more modern-sounding danceable version. A track I think I'll revisit from time to time again.

The Thrillseekers / Mike Nichol - Adjusted EP01 [Adjusted Music]

Mike Nichol's track my pick of the three. I like the techy climax but how it also introduces the melodic riff afterwards tastefully. The track is arranged as if there's a story to tell, and for that it gets a thumbs up from me. The two other Thrillseekers tracks sound fine. The melodies...

Above & Beyond And PROFF - Palermo / Fractals EP [Anjunadeep]

A far cry from their best works. Melodically very safe and bland. Miss the days when PROFF had his unique energetic sound, or A&B could put write truly emotive chord progressions and breakdowns. Expected more from them.

Solarstone & Super-Frog Saves Tokyo - Rust (Luke Terry Remix) [Pure Trance]

Didn't particularly stand out on first few listens esp. on the Pure Trance compilation, but this has somewhat grown on me. It's understated and mellow. The acid riffs and FX contribute nicely to the atmosphere. The buildup arguably better than the main melodic section in my opinion.

    Ascension - Someone (Mixes) [1997]

My personal favourite is the Signum Remix featured on a 2008 remix package. A surprisingly dark and brooding remake with big distorted-sounding synths.

    Darren Tate - War [Anjunabeats]

The last track taken from his latest album Metamorphosis on Anjunabeats. An uplifting and emotive piece of breaks. The climax is especially powerful with the soaring vocals and piano synth stabs coming all together. Recommend a listen even if you aren't a big fan of his recent works.

Scott Cameron - Spring Fall [Pure Trance]

It's been a slow year in terms of quality trance releases, haven't really come across much of note so far. This one has an interesting melodic section with some lush synth work and pleasant melodies. A decent track overall. Not a big fan of the plasticky kick and snares that seem to be a staple...
